New Worldwide Online Video QoE Report Shows Qwilt Delivers Over 80% Improvement in Consumer Quality of Experience During Prime Time

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., November 21, 2013 — Qwilt, a leading provider of transparent caching and online video delivery solutions, today reported new Worldwide Online Video Quality of Experience (QoE) data, compiled from analytic network performance insights from its global customer deployments. In its first annual report, the company measured the average bitrate of customer networks across North America, South America, Europe and Asia, to determine actual viewer QoE during peak viewing times, from popular content providers, like Netflix and YouTube; average bitrates were measured from video streams delivered by Qwilt and those delivered by upstream content providers. The comparison of the two average bit rates shows the real QoE impact of Qwilt’s solution in operator networks. The report data conclusively shows that Qwilt’s transparent caching solution, the QB-Series Video Fabric Controller, consistently delivered more than 50-percent of the video traffic while producing greater than 80-percent improvement in video streaming QoE during peak times.

Quality of Service and Experience: The Internet Video Delivery Conundrum

Subscriber quality of service and satisfaction is key1 to remaining viable in today’s highly competitive broadband services marketplace. In a 2013 video solutions survey conducted by Accenture, 3,501 consumers from Brazil, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and United States indicated their top concerns when watching videos online are video quality (42-percent) and stream download (51-percent).

“Delivering high quality service is becoming increasingly difficult for broadband providers as the volume of video on networks continues to grow,” said Colin Dixon, founder and chief analyst at nScreenMedia. “The results from Qwilt’s report demonstrate how transparent caching can be a key1 tool in improving quality and saving operators money, particularly during peak usage times.”

Qwilt’s QB-Series Video Fabric Controllers eliminate the need for replication of content streams from content provider sites and content delivery networks (CDNs), thereby reducing traffic and congestion on operator networks to ensure a consistently seamless and high quality viewing experience for consumers.

The industry’s first and only solution deployed at the subscriber edge of the network, Qwilt’s purpose-built Video Fabric uniquely addresses both the challenges and opportunities of broadband video delivery. The QB-Series Video Fabric Controllers uniquely monitor network video traffic in real time to identify trending and popular titles, then store them in close proximity to the end user, to support large volumes of traffic while delivering unprecedented reliability, performance, and dramatically improved QoE.

“Consumer expectations for a quality viewing experience have never been higher, and with the growth in video traffic reaching near exponential levels and showing no signs of slowing, operators are realizing that the old model of simply expanding their network infrastructure through brute force is broken – a new way of thinking and a fresh approach is required to keep pace with demand,” said Alon Maor, CEO and co-founder of Qwilt. “Transparent video caching is a superior, software-defined, intelligent network architecture. It offers a cost effective approach to significantly improving network utilization for operators, while dramatically improving the quality of delivery and experience for consumers, especially during critical peak viewing hours, when networks are most stressed. We’re proud to be leading the way in the development of a next generation transparent caching solution that delivers amazing performance gains, like those presented in our first annual Worldwide Online Video QoE report.”
